Your NIN Is Now Linked to Your Tax ID. Here’s How to Find Yours
If you have a National Identification Number (NIN), there is a good chance you already have a Tax ID and may not need to go through a separate registration process to find it.

Nigeria’s tax administration system has moved further towards linking tax records with the country’s national identity system. Under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, every taxable person is required to register and obtain a Tax ID for tax compliance purposes. The law also requires people using banking, insurance, stockbroking and other financial services to provide a Tax ID.
For individuals, the new system connects the Tax ID to the NIN. The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) now provides an online Tax ID portal where an individual can retrieve their Tax ID using their NIN.
There is also a simpler option that many Nigerians may not know about.
You can check your Tax ID through NINAuth
NIMC’s NINAuth app now gives users access to records connected to their NIN. Since June 2026, the app has included a Tax ID under its “Do More with NINAuth” feature.
According to NIMC, Nigerians with a NIN can log into the NINAuth mobile app and view their Tax ID. The same feature also gives users access to other identity linked records, including their NIN slip.
That means you may not need to visit a tax office simply because you want to know your Tax ID.
You can also use the official NRS Tax ID portal. Select Individual, choose NIN as the retrieval method, enter your details and retrieve your Tax ID. The NRS portal specifically provides NIN based Tax ID retrieval for individuals.
Why is the Tax ID becoming more important?
The Tax ID is becoming part of how government and financial institutions identify taxpayers.
The Nigeria Tax Administration Act requires a Tax ID to be stated on tax returns, tax related documents and documents prepared for transactions. It also requires people engaging with banking, insurance, stockbroking and other financial services to provide a Tax ID.
The NRS also says a valid Tax ID is required for a growing range of public and private services, including banking, employment documentation, government contracts and statutory filings.
This does not mean that having a Tax ID automatically means you owe tax.
The Tax ID is an identification number used for tax administration. Your actual tax liability depends on your income, applicable deductions, exemptions, rates and other provisions of the tax laws.
That distinction matters because some people may hear that Tax IDs are now being used more widely and assume that obtaining one creates a new tax bill. It does not.
What if you already have an old TIN?
This is where checking your records is useful.
Nigeria’s tax administration system is transitioning to the new Tax ID framework. Rather than assuming that you need to register again, first check whether a Tax ID has already been linked to your identity.
For an individual with a NIN, the official NRS Tax ID portal provides a way to retrieve the number. NINAuth also provides access to the Tax ID through the NIN linked identity system.
If your personal details do not match the records held by NIMC, that can also affect your ability to retrieve your Tax ID. This makes it important to keep your identity information accurate and consistent.
Your Tax ID is worth knowing
You do not need to wait until a bank, employer, government agency or tax process asks for your Tax ID before finding out what it is.
If you already have a NIN, check NINAuth or use the official NRS Tax ID portal to see whether your Tax ID is available.
And be careful with where you enter your NIN.
NIMC warns Nigerians against submitting their NIN or BVN to unauthorised apps and websites. Use official NIMC and NRS channels when checking or retrieving identity and tax information.
